Restoration of the railway infrastructure in Romania and PNRR

Romania is no exception to this, the transport sector being the chapter where there was a significant increase in pollution (59 percent compared to 1990). Rail transportation is a viable, environmentally friendly and efficient alternative to land transportation, but it has been systematically neglected by Romanian governments.

The revitalization of rail transportation of people and goods should be a national priority for the Romanian Government both in terms of ecology and the transition to a green economy and regional development. Unfortunately, according to OECD data, at European level Romania allocates by far the least resources for investments in the railway sector, being significantly surpassed by countries such as Croatia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary. From PNNR to ROP and POIM, Romania can attract such funds to decarbonize the economy and the transport sector.

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Romania and the Institute for Social Solidarity invites you to the launch of the report "PNRR and the railways: A historic opportunity to cover the sustainable transport deficit in Romania", authors Cornel Ban and Sorin Gog. The report analyzes the economic and ecological importance of railway infrastructure for Romania and proposes a series of recommendations on which railway projects have the best funding opportunities on PNRR and shows how we could decarbonize the transport sector using funds from various European programs.

The event will take place in Romanian, with simultaneous translation into English.
