The year 2025 was an extremely tense one for Romania from a political, economic, and social perspective. After the presidential elections in December 2024 were canceled, the electoral games continued until May 2025, when a new round of elections took place. Following these, after a close contest, a pro-European president was elected, defeating his far-right sovereignist opponent.

The victory of President Nicușor Dan paved the way for the formation of a new government, led by the liberal Ilie Bolojan, the result of negotiations between four political parties: PSD, PNL, USR, and UDMR. The new executive faced the difficult task of adopting administrative and budgetary-fiscal measures to reduce Romania's excessive budget deficit.
