Update of the minimum consumption basket for a decent living

Friedrich Ebert Foundation Romania and Syndex Romania updated the value of the minimum consumption basket for a decent living in Romania for the year 2023.

Friedrich Ebert Foundation Romania and Syndex Romania updated the value of the minimum consumption basket for a decent living in Romania for the year 2023. The value of the minimum consumption basket for a decent living for a family of two adults and two children is 9978 lei per month. The value of the basket for a family of two adults and one child is 8205 lei per month, for a family of two adults without children it is 6162 lei per month, and for a single adult it is 3807 lei per month. The recalculation of the value of the basket was based on the price indexes communicated by the National Institute of Statistics for September 2023, compared to September 2022. The increase in the total value of the consumption basket is due to the strong increase in costs for all items except housing (water, electricity, gas and heat). Consumption basket for a decent living for the reference family (two adults and two children), as updated in September 2023 The idea of a minimum consumption basket for a decent living involves compiling a set of periodic expenditures necessary to meet basic needs for a given family structure. Besides the immediate needs for survival - shelter, food - the minimum basket for a decent living covers a comprehensive set of current needs such as clothing, personal hygiene, education, health care, transport, communications, recreation, as well as possible unexpected expenses. For details on the structure and how the value of the minimum consumption basket for a decent living is updated, see the original study: Ștefan Guga, Adina Mihăilescu and Marcel Spatari, "Minimum monthly consumption basket for a decent living for the population of Romania", Bucharest, 2018, Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung (in Romanian), available online at: library.fes.de/pdf-files/bueros/bukarest/14759.pdf.
