Household consumption

The volume and structure of household consumption in Romania.

Although they have increased substantially (especially after joining the EU), household consumption expenditure in Romania remains among the lowest in Europe – just over €400 per adult per month.

In countries where households have little money to spend (such as Romania), food accounts for a large share of consumption. Conversely, when households have more money, food accounts for a relatively small share, leaving more money for recreation and education. Thus, 28% of household consumption in Romania is allocated to consumption, while in countries such as Austria, Germany, and Denmark, the corresponding share does not exceed 12%.

There are large differences in the consumption structure between households in Romania. In the case of the poorest 20% of households, three-quarters of consumption is represented by food and housing.

There are also significant differences in the structure of consumption depending on the degree of urbanization of communities. Contrary to expectations, food accounts for a larger share of consumption in rural areas than in urban areas. In contrast, housing costs are higher in urban areas.
