România își schimbă treptat profilul migrațional: pentru al treilea an consecutiv, numărul celor care se stabilesc în țară este mai mare decât al celor care pleacă. În perioada 2022–2024, România a înregistrat aproape 200.000 de locuitori în plus datorită imigrației, arată Monitorul Social, un proiect al Fundației Friedrich Ebert, pe baza datelor oficiale.
Cele mai recente date publicate de Institutul Național de Statistică confirmă faptul că România nu mai este dominant o țară sursă de emigrație, ci preponderent de imigrație: în 2024, pentru al treilea an succesiv, în România s-au stabilit, pentru o perioadă mai lungă de 12 luni, mai multe persoane decât cele care au emigrat. Soldul migrator a fost de 97114 persoane în 2022, +66065 persoane în 2023, +36200 persoane în 2024.
Trebuie precizat că, atunci când vorbim despre imigranți, nu ne referim exclusiv la cetățeni străini. Astfel, în anul 2023, cele mai recente date publicate de Eurostatarătau că aproximativ două treimi (217,5 mii) din cei 324 mii de imigranți de lungă durată înregistrați erau cetățeni români reveniți în țară. Dintre cei 106,5 mii de imigranți cu cetățenie străină, cei mai numeroși erau din Nepal (18.042 ), Sri Lanka (14.316), Turcia (9.366 ), India (7.830 ), R. Moldova (5.742 ), Bangladesh (4.982 ).
În mod similar, datele despre emigranții din România nu cuprind doar cetățeni români. Astfel, în anul 2023 sunt înregistrați 239 mii de emigranți din România. Dintre aceștia, numai 150 mii (63%) aveau cetățenie română. Contingente importante de emigranți din România aveau cetățenie nepaleză (11,417), turcă (10.698), srilankeză (8,123), moldovenească (7.738), indiană (5,474).
